Advertising Sales Representatives

Our advertising reach consists of Northern Westchester, with a focus on Katonah, Bedford, Goldens Bridge, Lewisboro, North Salem, Pound Ridge, South Salem, Waccabuc, and the surrounding towns. All applicants must be able to attend in-person meetings in these and surrounding towns.

Individuals must possess refined customer service skills, be goal-oriented and results-driven, and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills. We value those who are passionate about proactively pursuing new accounts and dedicated to growing our business.

As a startup magazine, we are looking for a team player to begin right away with a mindset toward future work and expansion as our publication grows.

This position is commission-based.

Advertising Sales Representative responsibilities:

  • Establish, develop, and maintain positive business and customer relationships.
  • Reach out and/or generate customer leads through cold calling.
  • Achieve agreed upon sales targets and outcomes.
  • Analyze the market’s potential.
  • Track & report your progress.
  • Closing customer contracts and generating new sales.
  • Maintain knowledge of best practices and trends.
  • Producing innovative ideas and solutions.

Advertising Sales Representative skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to negotiate and problem-solve.
  • Knowledge of current marketing and advertising trends and best practices.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint or Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrable business acumen and an understanding of the business sales processes.
  • College degree and previous advertising sales experience is preferred.

Student Internship Opportunities – Summer 2023

Who we are looking for:

Ideal candidates will be high school or college students who are resourceful, independent and have an interest in the publishing industry. Interns will work closely with a mentor and gain hands-on experience in writing, photography, videography, design and marketing. Interns may have the opportunity to attend staff meetings, based on availability. Sense of humor a plus!

General information:

Interns are expected to work approximately 3-5 hours per day, depending on how much they’d like to get out of the process. Length of internships vary depending on the specifics of the position. All internships are unpaid, but interns will walk away with numerous print and online clips (when applicable), an understanding of what it’s like to work for a local publication and marketable skills they can use in their future academic and professional careers, regardless of industry.

Editorial interns will:

Be comfortable speaking with children and adults.

Understand proper phone and email etiquette.

Be detail oriented.

Demonstrate an interest in research, writing and reporting.

Learn basic journalism skills, including how to: find a story, pitch a story idea, conduct an interview, write in various styles and fact check.

Write short articles for the web (approximately 600-800 words) and write longer articles for our print (approximately 800-1,200 words) publication.

Become familiar with AP style.

Art & Design interns will:

Know how to create digital illustrations, sketches, watercolors, etc. for various articles, based on specific instruction related to the topic.

(Note: Artists will be allowed some creative freedom in how they execute the idea.)

Have the opportunity to submit non-assigned artwork for consideration in the magazine.

For web design: Have some experience designing in WordPress and Adobe Suite.

For print design: Have some knowledge of graphic design in Adobe Suite.

Photography interns will:

Have an interest in news photography.

Have some flexibility to photograph timely community events.

Demonstrate an eye for artistic photography.

Capture images of people/places in the areas we cover.

Contact/work with local businesses to obtain permission for photoshoots.

Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop a plus.

Videography interns will:

Have an interest in videography, with an eye for artistic cinematography and editing.

Have some flexibility to shoot (and possibly photograph as well) timely news, school and community event.

Possess an understanding of video editing as a part of the storytelling process.

Contact/work with local businesses to obtain permission for photoshoots.

Learn what captures attention and how to ensure you obtain the proper footage.

Knowledge of Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro a plus.

Marketing & Sales interns will:

Be familiar with how to post relevant and engaging content on social media platforms.

Learn how to develop and execute a social media strategy that increases our audience and engagement across multiple platforms.

Learn how to develop and execute an advertising sales strategy.

Participate in brainstorming sessions.

Establish and implement a publishing schedule for social media and targeted email campaigns.

Produce marketing tools, including emails, videos, brochures and reader engagement opportunities.
